Pedestrian Accidents in Tennessee

Tennessee sees a significant number of pedestrian-related accidents each year. According to recent data, hundreds of pedestrians are struck by vehicles annually across the state, many of which result in serious or fatal injuries. Urban areas, high-speed roadways, and limited pedestrian infrastructure often contribute to these tragic incidents.
Understanding the dangers pedestrians face on roadways highlights the importance of safety awareness for both drivers and those traveling on foot. Here are some key risk factors:
- Low Visibility Conditions – Many pedestrian crashes occur in low-light situations, such as early mornings or nighttime hours, when visibility is reduced. Poor lighting and a lack of reflective clothing can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians.
- Pedestrian Right-of-Way Issues – In some cases, pedestrians may attempt to cross roadways where there are no designated crosswalks, leading to dangerous situations. Both drivers and pedestrians should be aware of right-of-way laws to prevent collisions.
- Distracted Driving – Drivers who are not paying full attention to the road may fail to notice pedestrians, especially if they step into traffic unexpectedly. Common distractions include mobile devices, in-car entertainment systems, and other passengers.
- Speeding Vehicles – Excessive speed increases the likelihood of severe injuries in pedestrian crashes. The faster a vehicle is moving, the less time a driver has to react and the greater the impact force.
- Impaired Driving or Walking – Both drivers and pedestrians can be at risk when alcohol or drugs are involved. Impairment slows reaction times and impairs judgment, making collisions more likely.
