Carter Co., TN (March 3, 2025) – A collision on Mary Patton Highway claimed the lives of two people and left another injured Thursday evening.
The accident occurred just after 7 p.m. on February 27 near Big Springs Road. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), a 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling north when it veered across the double yellow lines into the southbound lane. The Chevrolet struck a 2016 Nissan Versa head-on after the Nissan attempted to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid the crash.
Following the impact, the Chevrolet overturned multiple times before coming to a stop off the roadway. The Nissan ultimately came to rest on the right shoulder of the northbound lane after hitting a guardrail.
THP identified the driver of the Chevrolet as 47-year-old Thomas Whittington of North Carolina. He did not survive the crash. Another person was also killed in the accident, though their identity has not been released. At least one other individual sustained injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Fatal Car Accidents in Tennessee

Tennessee sees thousands of serious crashes every year, many resulting in devastating injuries or fatalities. In a recent year, the Tennessee Department of Safety reported more than 1,300 fatal crashes across the state. Head-on collisions, like the one in Carter County, are particularly dangerous, often leading to life-altering consequences for victims and their families.
Understanding why these accidents occur can help drivers take necessary precautions. Some of the most common causes of head-on crashes include:
- Lane Departures: When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic, whether due to distraction, drowsiness, or impairment, the risk of a deadly collision rises significantly.
- Speeding: High speeds reduce reaction time and make it harder for drivers to regain control of their vehicles, increasing the severity of crashes.
- Weather Conditions: Rain, fog, and ice can make roads slick and decrease visibility, leading to drivers unintentionally drifting into opposing lanes.
- Impaired Driving: Alcohol or drug use can impair a driver's judgment, coordination, and reaction time, making it more likely for them to veer into oncoming traffic.
- Driver Fatigue: Falling asleep at the wheel or losing focus for even a moment can result in a tragic accident.
