Chattanooga, TN (May 22, 2025) – A vehicle accident early Tuesday morning in Chattanooga left at least one person injured and caused delays near a busy intersection. The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on May 20 at the intersection of West 18th Street and Broad Street.
According to a report from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, the accident involved at least two vehicles. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported and found one or more individuals in need of medical assistance.
First responders assessed the scene and rendered aid to those injured. Paramedics transported at least one victim to a local hospital for additional treatment. The nature and extent of injuries have not been publicly confirmed, but they were serious enough to require hospital care.
The crash caused temporary disruptions to morning traffic, with lanes partially blocked as law enforcement officers documented the scene and cleared debris. Drivers in the area were asked to seek alternate routes while cleanup operations took place. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the collision. It is currently unclear whether any citations will be issued, but the incident remains under investigation.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Tennessee

Tennessee roads can be dangerous, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic. In 2023, the state recorded over 150,000 motor vehicle crashes, with a significant percentage leading to injury. Many of these incidents occur at intersections, where congestion, speed, and driver behavior often intersect.
Every crash is different, but today we're looking more closely at how distracted driving contributes to accidents like this one:
- Use of Mobile Devices: Cell phone use while driving continues to be a major hazard. Whether it's texting, calling, or checking directions, taking your eyes off the road even for a few seconds increases the chance of a crash dramatically.
- Daydreaming or Inattention: Mental distractions are just as risky. Drivers who lose focus or become preoccupied with thoughts may fail to notice traffic lights, other vehicles, or changing road conditions.
- Eating or drinking: Trying to juggle food or beverages while driving can pull a driver's attention away from the task at hand. Spills can cause sudden movements that result in collisions.
- Adjusting Controls or Navigation: Reaching to change the radio station or inputting information into a GPS can lead to momentary inattention. Even glances can be enough to cause an accident in busy areas.
- Talking to Passengers: Engaging conversations can pull mental focus away from the road. Especially for newer drivers, distraction by passengers is a common cause of crashes.
