Chattanooga, TN (October 1, 2025) – A three-car crash on Amnicola Highway in Chattanooga left one person dead and caused major traffic disruptions on Tuesday afternoon, September 30.

The accident occurred around 1:54 p.m. when a 60-year-old woman was seen driving erratically in a Chevy Captiva. According to Chattanooga Police, the woman sideswiped a southbound Peterbilt truck and then collided head-on with a Chevy Express.

Emergency medical services transported the driver of the Captiva to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver and passenger of the Chevy Express were also injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the driver of the Peterbilt truck was not injured.

As a result of the crash, a section of Amnicola Highway was shut down in both directions from Wisdom Street to Lost Mound, causing significant traffic delays. Emergency responders worked quickly to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene.

The Chattanooga Police Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased woman and wish a full recovery to the injured individuals.

Car Accidents in Tennessee

Fatal Crash Shuts Down Amnicola Highway, 1 Dead

Car accidents in Tennessee remain a leading cause of injuries and fatalities on the roads each year. These accidents often result in serious injuries, property damage, and emotional trauma for all involved, highlighting the importance of safe driving and awareness on Tennessee roads.

From busy urban streets in Chattanooga to rural highways across the state, collisions can occur due to a variety of factors. Common causes of car accidents include:

  • Distracted driving: Drivers who take their eyes off the road to text, use a phone, or adjust the radio are less likely to notice changes in traffic conditions. This can lead to serious accidents, like the one on Amnicola Highway, where the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle.
  • Speeding: Excessive speed increases the likelihood of a collision. It reduces reaction time and can cause drivers to lose control, especially when making turns or avoiding obstacles. In high-speed collisions, injuries tend to be more severe.
  • Impaired driving: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reaction times. Even small amounts of alcohol can make it dangerous to drive, leading to accidents that could have been avoided.
  • Weather conditions: Rain, fog, or snow can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Drivers must adjust their speed and driving habits to match weather conditions. Failing to do so often results in accidents, especially on highways.
  • Driver fatigue: Tired drivers have slower reflexes, making it difficult to respond quickly to road hazards. Fatigue can impair judgment just like alcohol or drugs, and it's a leading cause of accidents during long drives or late-night travel.

Accidents like this one are often avoidable, and in many cases, the victims may be entitled to compensation for their injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and more. A car accident lawyer can help guide you through the legal process, ensuring that you receive the compensation you deserve.
