Gatlinburg, TN (June 30, 2025) – An early morning collision in Sevier County took the life of a 43-year-old man on Friday, June 27. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Thomas Largent, a resident of Tennessee, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Toyota Tundra traveling east along East Parkway when the accident happened just before sunrise.
Around 5:53 a.m., authorities say Largent's Toyota Tundra drifted across the center line for reasons still under investigation and collided head-on with a commercial truck traveling in the opposite direction. The impact forced both vehicles off the road, where they came to rest in a ditch on the south side of the highway near 4857 East Parkway.
Emergency crews arrived at the scene quickly, but, Largent did not survive the crash. The driver of the commercial truck escaped without any injuries, according to initial reports from THP.
Local authorities spent several hours at the scene Friday morning, working to document evidence and clear the wreckage. Traffic delays were reported along East Parkway as investigators pieced together what may have caused Largent's vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic. At this time, the exact factors contributing to the crash are still being reviewed by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Thomas Largent.
Car Accidents in Tennessee

Accidents like this one serve as a stark reminder of how quickly lives can be changed on Tennessee's roadways. In Tennessee, motor vehicle accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of accidental deaths and injuries. Recent figures show that the state sees thousands of serious collisions each year, with many involving factors like driver error, distracted driving, or roadway conditions. Staying focused and alert behind the wheel is one of the best ways to help prevent these tragedies.
Learning more about how crashes happen can help all drivers stay safer. Here are a few key points about common causes and risk factors:
- Driver Fatigue: Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence. Fatigue slows reaction times and impairs judgment, increasing the likelihood of crossing lanes or missing hazards.
- Crossing Center Lines: Many severe crashes occur when a vehicle drifts across the center line, often due to distraction, fatigue, or impairment. Maintaining lane discipline and staying attentive is crucial, especially on rural highways.
- Commercial Vehicle Involvement: When passenger vehicles collide with larger commercial trucks, the results can be catastrophic. The difference in size and weight means these accidents often end in serious injury or worse for those in smaller vehicles.
- Roadway Conditions: Poor lighting, sharp curves, or slippery surfaces can make even a familiar road dangerous. Drivers should adjust speed and remain vigilant in less-than-ideal conditions.
- Early Morning Hours: Crashes that happen in the early morning often involve fatigued drivers or limited visibility. Being aware of the heightened risks during these times can help prevent tragedy.
