Hixson, TN (November 6, 2025) – A serious crash involving a Hamilton County school bus and two other vehicles occurred on Wednesday, November 5, on Middle Valley Road near the city-county line. The collision resulted in injuries and multiple charges for one driver involved, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened around 6:25 a.m. when a red Honda Civic attempted to pass another vehicle by crossing the double yellow line, striking the school bus nearly head-on. The Civic also collided with the vehicle it was trying to overtake.
Emergency crews, including the Chattanooga Fire Department and Hamilton County EMS, responded immediately. Firefighters discovered the bus driver trapped inside the damaged vehicle and had to cut open the driver's side to free them. The bus driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Officials confirmed that children aboard the school bus were not injured. They were safely transferred to another bus to continue their route. The driver of the Honda, identified as Ethan Vela, initially left the scene but later returned. Deputies arrested him and charged him with driving without a license, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury, reckless driving, and improper passing.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash. Multiple agencies, including the Chattanooga Fire Department and Hamilton County EMS, assisted at the scene.
We extend our best wishes to the injured bus driver and others affected by this collision.
Bus Accidents in Tennessee
Accidents involving school buses and public transportation vehicles can have devastating consequences, especially when they occur during morning commutes. These crashes often involve multiple vehicles and result from reckless maneuvers, speeding, or improper passing.
In Tennessee, bus and public transport accidents pose unique risks due to the number of passengers involved and the size of the vehicles. While school buses are designed with safety in mind, collisions can still cause significant injuries to drivers, pedestrians, and other motorists.
Common causes of these accidents include:
- Distracted driving: Texting or using electronic devices can cause drivers to drift into oncoming lanes.
- Reckless passing: Attempting to pass in no-passing zones or across double yellow lines frequently leads to head-on collisions.
- Driver fatigue: Early morning routes increase the risk of drowsy driving accidents.
- Improper vehicle maintenance: Mechanical issues, such as brake failure or tire blowouts, can make large vehicles difficult to control.
Victims of bus crashes—whether they are passengers, drivers, or other motorists—may suffer severe injuries that require medical treatment and rehabilitation. Working with an experienced personal injury attorney can help victims pursue compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering.
