Jefferson County, TN (July 23, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash that occurred on the afternoon of July 22 resulted in eight people being injured, including four children, and led to the temporary shutdown of all northbound lanes on Interstate 81 in Jefferson County.
Emergency personnel rushed to the crash site shortly after 3:22 p.m. following reports of a head-on collision near mile marker 1. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 33-year-old woman driving a minivan carrying five children attempted to use a crossover on the interstate, crossing into oncoming traffic. Her maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with a pickup truck traveling northbound.
Three individuals in the minivan, including two children and the driver, were airlifted or transported by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The pickup truck's occupants, three adults and two children, were also taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Dandridge Fire Department confirmed that seven of the injured victims were transported via ambulance, while one was flown by LifeStar helicopter.
Following the crash, all northbound traffic on Interstate 81 was diverted to Interstate 40 East while crews worked to clear the scene. The Tennessee Department of Transportation confirmed that the road was reopened to traffic just before 4:30 p.m.
Authorities have since charged the minivan driver with failure to exercise due care and violating a traffic control device. Officials continue to investigate the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Tennessee
This tragic crash in Tennessee reminds us just how unpredictable the roads can be. Below is helpful information about some common causes of car accidents in Tennessee:
- Improper Lane Changes: Unsafe or sudden lane changes, such as using emergency crossovers or failing to signal, often lead to serious crashes. These actions can disorient oncoming drivers and cause head-on collisions or side-swipes.
- Distracted Driving: From phone use to dealing with children in the back seat, distractions can pull a driver's attention from the road long enough to miss critical warning signs or traffic signals.
- Driver Fatigue: Fatigue impairs reaction time and decision-making skills, making it more likely for a driver to drift between lanes or miss critical traffic signs.
- Speeding: Traveling at high speeds reduces the driver's ability to stop quickly or maneuver around obstacles, increasing the risk of accidents and the severity of injuries sustained.
- Misuse of Road Infrastructure: Crossovers, emergency lanes, and U-turns are designed for limited use. Unauthorized use can lead to confusion and deadly encounters with other vehicles.
