Knox County, TN (June 15, 2025) – A fatal collision took place Friday night on Maynardville Highway, leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured. Emergency responders from Knox County Rural Metro Fire rushed to the scene of the crash around 8 p.m. on June 13, near Loyston Road and the Union County line.
According to officials, the wreck involved three vehicles and completely blocked off the highway in both directions. The damage was significant, and the wreckage stretched across the road, making access difficult for crews.
Paramedics transported three individuals to a local hospital for further medical care. One person was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of those involved have not yet been released, as authorities are notifying family members.
The Knox County Sheriff's Office confirmed that its Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit, known as TANGO, is investigating the crash. Early findings suggest that speed likely played a role in the collision, based on the severity of the vehicle damage.
As of 10 p.m. Friday, the Tennessee Department of Transportation reported that Maynardville Highway remained closed in both directions at Loyston Road while investigators processed the scene and crews worked to clear the area.
We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragic incident.
Car Accidents in Tennessee

Crashes continue to be a serious concern across Tennessee, with thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities reported each year. From rural highways to urban streets, motor vehicle accidents disrupt lives daily. Speed, distraction, and driver error are often contributing factors. The state continues to promote safe driving measures to reduce these incidents.
Below is a closer look at the impact of speeding-related crashes and why they can be especially dangerous:
- Speed and Reaction Time: Higher speeds reduce the amount of time a driver has to react to sudden changes in traffic or obstacles. Even a split-second delay can mean the difference between avoiding a crash and a serious impact. The faster a vehicle is going, the less time there is to make crucial decisions.
- Increased Severity of Injuries: Crashes involving speeding vehicles typically result in more serious injuries. The force of impact is greater, often leading to traumatic injuries such as fractures, spinal damage, and internal injuries. Victims are more likely to need prolonged hospital care and rehabilitation.
- Greater Property Damage: Speeding not only causes more violent collisions but also leads to extensive vehicle and infrastructure damage. This can create additional hazards for others on the road, especially when debris is scattered across travel lanes.
- Reduced Effectiveness of Safety Features: Modern cars are built with safety systems designed to protect occupants, but many of these features are less effective at high speeds. Seat belts, airbags, and crumple zones perform best at moderate collision forces and can be overwhelmed when impact speeds are excessive.
