Pedestrian Accidents in Tennessee

Pedestrian-related accidents remain a growing concern across Tennessee. According to state data, Tennessee has seen a steady increase in pedestrian crashes in recent years, with more than 1,500 incidents reported annually. These events often lead to serious injuries due to the vulnerability of pedestrians compared to motor vehicles. The consequences are especially severe when young children are involved.
One important factor to understand is how these accidents happen. Below are several common contributing causes of pedestrian accidents in Tennessee:
- Failure to Yield at Crosswalks: Many pedestrian accidents occur when drivers fail to yield the right of way at marked or unmarked crosswalks. Even when pedestrians have the signal or are clearly crossing, distracted or impatient drivers may not stop in time.
- Poor Visibility at Night: A large percentage of pedestrian crashes take place after sunset. Limited street lighting, dark clothing, and driver fatigue all increase the risk of accidents after dark.
- Speeding in Urban Areas: Higher speeds reduce a driver's ability to stop quickly and increase the force of impact in a collision. Even going just 10 mph over the limit can make a life-or-death difference when a pedestrian is involved.
- Unmarked Intersections and Road Crossings: Pedestrians often cross at locations without designated crosswalks, which increases their risk of being hit. In areas like North Broadway where traffic moves quickly and foot traffic is common, this can be especially dangerous.
- Distracted Driving: Drivers who are texting, talking on the phone, or otherwise distracted are less likely to see pedestrians in time to avoid a crash. Even a two-second distraction can have devastating results.
