Knoxville, TN (September 21, 2025) – On Saturday, September 20, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Alcoa Highway in Knoxville, resulting in the death of a female driver.

The Knoxville Police Department reported that officers responded to the scene just before 4 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Alcoa Highway near Woodson Drive. According to investigators, the crash involved a Hyundai sedan and a tractor-trailer. The Hyundai driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the Hyundai had been traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Alcoa Highway when it collided head-on with the tractor-trailer. Police stated that the impact caused severe damage to the sedan and led to the immediate death of the driver. The driver of the tractor-trailer remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Authorities closed portions of Alcoa Highway to allow emergency crews and investigators to work safely. The Tennessee Department of Transportation confirmed that all lanes have since reopened. The Knoxville Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances of the wrong-way travel that led to the deadly collision.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life in this tragic incident.

Wrong-Way Collisions on Tennessee Highways

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the force of head-on impacts. High-speed highways such as Alcoa Highway present an elevated risk, as drivers have limited time and space to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

In Tennessee, wrong-way collisions are commonly linked to several contributing factors:

  • Driver impairment – Alcohol or drug impairment can severely affect judgment, leading to entry onto the wrong side of the roadway.

  • Fatigue – Drowsy driving can cause a motorist to miss critical signs or become disoriented.

  • Confusion at interchanges – Complex highway access points may contribute to drivers mistakenly entering the wrong direction of travel.

  • Distracted driving – Focusing on a phone or other device may prevent a driver from recognizing traffic patterns and signage.

The outcomes of these crashes are frequently severe. Victims may sustain life-altering injuries such as spinal trauma, traumatic brain injuries, or multiple fractures. In cases where fatalities occur, surviving family members face immense emotional and financial challenges, including funeral costs, loss of income, and the long-term absence of their loved one.

When a wrong-way accident is caused by driver negligence, such as impairment or distraction, affected families may have legal grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation in such cases can help address financial losses, including medical expenses incurred before death, funeral arrangements, lost future earnings, and the profound impact of losing a family member.

Navigating these legal processes, however, can be highly complex. Insurance companies may dispute liability or attempt to minimize payouts, creating additional strain for grieving families. Engaging our brave and knowledgeable wrongful death lawyer in Knoxville can provide crucial support during this process. Attorneys can gather evidence, review traffic camera footage, consult accident reconstruction experts, and advocate for full and fair compensation.
