What to Do After a Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Tennessee

Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on E Mallory Ave

A fatal hit-and-run crash in Tennessee often leaves families searching for clear next steps. In most cases, that includes staying in contact with law enforcement, requesting official reports, notifying insurance providers about possible uninsured motorist coverage, protecting evidence and limiting public statements, and speaking with an attorney about available legal options.

First, contact law enforcement and request updates about the investigation. Police often gather surveillance footage, witness statements, and physical evidence from the crash scene. Staying informed helps families understand the status of the search for the driver. Tennessee law treats leaving the scene of a fatal accident as a serious criminal offense.

Second, secure official documentation. Request copies of the crash report, medical examiner findings, and any related investigative summaries when they become available. These records may become important for insurance claims or wrongful death actions.

Third, notify insurance providers. In some cases, uninsured motorist coverage may apply if the at-fault driver remains unidentified. An insurance representative can explain policy terms, but families should keep written records of all communication.

Fourth, avoid discussing details of the collision on social media. Public statements may affect future legal proceedings. Keep information organized and private while investigators continue their review.

Fifth, speak with a wrongful death attorney experienced in Tennessee hit-and-run cases. A lawyer can review available evidence, explain liability laws, and outline what types of compensation may be available. Tennessee law allows certain family members to pursue a wrongful death claim when negligence causes a fatal crash. Legal guidance can clarify deadlines, court procedures, and insurance issues without making promises about results.
