Pedestrian and Mobility Device Accidents in East Tennessee

Crashes involving pedestrians and individuals using mobility devices remain a serious safety concern across East Tennessee. Roads such as Cosby Highway often carry steady traffic throughout the morning hours, and interactions between motor vehicles and vulnerable roadway users can result in severe or fatal outcomes. Mobility scooter operators, like pedestrians, have little physical protection and are especially exposed during collisions with larger vehicles.

Common causes of pedestrian and mobility-related crashes include driver inattention, failure to yield the right of way, limited visibility during early morning hours, and misjudgment of speed or distance. In some cases, roadway design, lack of dedicated crossing areas, or insufficient lighting may also contribute to dangerous conditions. Even at relatively low speeds, the force of a collision between a vehicle and a person using a mobility device can lead to catastrophic injuries.

Fatal crashes often leave families facing sudden emotional and financial challenges. In non-fatal incidents, victims may suffer injuries such as head trauma, spinal cord damage, fractures, internal organ injuries, and long-term mobility impairments.

These injuries frequently require emergency medical care, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and ongoing support. In fatal cases, surviving family members may be left to manage funeral expenses and the loss of financial support or caregiving assistance.

When a fatal traffic accident occurs, understanding available legal options can be an important step for families. A claim may help address damages such as medical expenses incurred before death, funeral and burial costs, loss of income or benefits, and loss of companionship. Documentation, including police reports, witness statements, medical records, and scene evidence, often plays a critical role in determining how the collision occurred and whether liability may exist.

Because investigations take time, families may find it helpful to seek guidance early to understand their rights and responsibilities. Each case is different, and timelines for pursuing claims are governed by specific legal deadlines. Careful review of the facts can help ensure that important evidence is preserved and that families are informed as decisions are made.
